According to The Iran Project,Spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry Abdul Salam Jawad Akhundzada said his country intends to reduce its trade via Pakistan.

Most of Afghanistan’s imports and exports are carried out through Iran’s Chabahar Port, he said, adding that his country has no dependency on any of its neighbors.

Akhundzada further pointed out that Afghanistan’s policy is economy-oriented and that Kabul has established different trade and economic relations with various countries and could find alternative ways for our trade.

According to the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Investment, most of the country’s products are imported and exported through the Iranian ports including Chabahar Port, he added.

Given the challenges between Afghanistan and Pakistan, many Afghan experts believe that Iran’s Chabahar Port is a safe route that can cut Kabul’s dependency on Islamabad in the field of transit of goods to a great extent.

Chabahar, which sits at the mouth of the Gulf of Oman, is Iran’s first deepwater port that puts the country on the global oceanic trade route map. The port lies to the west of Iran’s border with Pakistan, about as far as Gwadar, a competing port developed by China in Pakistan, lies to the east of the border.
