Tehran says Japan proposed initiative to revive Iran nuclear deal

The Iran Project - Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, has announced that Japan has proposed an initiative to revive the stalled 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks in an interview with Japans Kyodo news agency on Sunday.

. Amirabdollahian stated that any initiative from Japan that aligns with Iran's interests would be viewed positively by Tehran.

However, he did not provide any details about the proposal.

He went on to say that he received the proposal from the Japanese government when he visited Tokyo in August and met Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and then Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Talks to revive the nuclear agreement have been halted due to excessive demands from the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, as well as their interference in Iran's domestic issues.

Despite the delay, Japan has expressed its support for reviving the deal and offered assistance.

Iran proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the JCPOA with six world powers. However, Washingtons unilateral withdrawal in May 2018 and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran left the future of the deal in limbo.

Negotiations started in Vienna in April 2021 to terminate the unilateral US sanctions and bring Washington back into full compliance with the deal.

The talks, however, stalled in August 2022 as Washington insisted on not terminating all the sanctions and failing to provide Iran with guarantees that it will not exit the agreement again.
