Austrian President Heinz Fischer is to pay an official visit to Iran next week, the first by a European head of state after the conclusion of a nuclear agreement between the Islamic Republic and six world powers.
The Austrian president will arrive in Tehran on September 7 at the head of a delegation for a three-day state visit.
Fischer’s trip will take place at the invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani with the purpose of discussing ways to improve Tehran-Vienna relations.
The Austrian president plans to hold talks with his Iranian counterpart, Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, speaker of Majlis (parliament) Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
He will also visit historical and cultural sites of the central Iranian city of Isfahan.
Fischer’s planned trip to Tehran comes 11 years after former President Thomas Klestil traveled to Tehran.
Iran and the P5+1 group of countries - the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany - succeeded in finalizing the text of the nuclear agreement, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in Vienna on July 14.
Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans, against the Islamic Republic.
