Iranian, Saudi FMs meet for fourth time since détente
The Iran Project - Iran and Saudi Arabia held their fourth meeting since announcing a rapprochement earlier this year.

The Saturday meeting, held in New York on the sidelines of a United Nations General Assembly meeting, focused on bilateral ties and regional developments.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement that Amirabdollahian and bin Farhan had discussed issues of mutual interest, including bilateral ties and regional developments, during the meeting held at the office of Saudi Arabia's Permanent Mission to the UN.

According to the statement,  both countries expressed satisfaction with the reopening of embassies and the exchange of ambassadors.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, stated that Iran is prepared to sign a comprehensive cooperation document with Saudi Arabia and emphasized the need to expand economic and trade relations.

He then put a premium on the establishment of a Joint Economic Commission to expand economic and trade relations between the two countries.

For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan, expressed eagerness to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

This meeting follows China's brokered détente in April, which allowed the restoration of normal diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after seven years.

The rapprochement is expected to have significant implications for peace and stability in the region.
