Top Iran, Russia, Turkey diplomats meet to discuss Syria
The Iran Project - Foreign ministers from Iran, Russia, and Turkey convened a tripartite summit in the Astana format during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Friday meeting aimed to address the Syrian crisis and promote peace and stability in the Arab country.

The summit was attended by Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen also present.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister criticized the worsening humanitarian situation in Syria, attributing part of the suffering to Western sanctions and the exploitation of Syria's resources.

He called for the removal of these "illegal" sanctions and stressed the importance of reconstruction efforts to alleviate the Syrian refugee crisis.

Amirabdollahian also emphasized the need for political dialogue under the United Nations' auspices and expressed support for combating terrorism while respecting Syria's sovereignty.

The Astana peace process, established in 2017, aims to end the Syrian conflict by involving both the government and opposition factions, with Iran, Russia, and Turkey playing key roles.
