Iran's top diplomat, EU's FP chief hold talks on JCPOA revival

Iran
The Iran Project - Irans foreign minister and the EU foreign policy chief have held discussions on the continuation of talks regarding the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

These talks have been stalled for over a year due to differences between Iran and the US.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, both parties emphasized the importance of dialogue and the full implementation of commitments by all parties involved in the JCPOA, according to an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement.

The EU official expressed readiness to follow up on the talks and engage in necessary consultations.

The statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted the parties' interest in taking concrete actions based on an agreed framework and establishing mutual understanding.

The talks have been on hold since August last year, with Iran blaming the lack of political will from the Biden administration to address the damage caused by the previous US administration's withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

The statement also mentioned that the parties discussed cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as bilateral and regional developments.

The European External Action Service released a statement highlighting the urgency of issues affecting EU-Iran relations and recent developments on the JCPOA.

The statement emphasized the importance of de-escalation and finding a diplomatic solution within the framework of the JCPOA.

The EU diplomat also called on Iran to release all detained EU citizens and cease alleged military cooperation with Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
