Iraq’s government committed to disarm terrorist groups in Kurdistan: Iran

The Iran Project - Iran and Iraq have reached an agreement to disarm terrorist groups based in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region within the next few weeks, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman announced.

Under the agreement, the Iraqi government will take on the responsibility of disarming these groups, vacating military barracks in the region, and transferring them to camps established by the Iraqi government, Naser Kanani said at a presser on Monday.

The terms of the memorandum of understanding have been communicated to the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Iran has emphasized that the September 19 deadline will not be extended and has warned that it will take action to ensure its own security if the agreement is not implemented.

Tehran has also criticized the presence of US occupation forces in Syria, stating that their deployment is illegal and contributes to instability in the region.

In another development, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the charge d'affaires of the Swiss embassy in Tehran, representing US interests in Iran, following the unloading of seized Iranian oil off the coast of Texas by the US Navy.

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry also stressed that Tehran-Moscow cooperation fall within the framework of bilateral relations and common interests, and is anchored in international laws.

He roundly dismissed Western allegations Iranian military drones have been employed against Ukraine.
