Why it is important to have a health and safety management system?

Why it is important to have a health and safety management system?
In Australia, Work Health and Safety (WHS), formerly known as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), is a law under the 2011 Work Health and Safety Act (WHS Act), aimed at protecting the health, safety and welfare of workers by reducing the risks posed by hazards, which could otherwise lead to an accident or illness, in the workplace.Prior to 2011, OHS laws varied with each state and territory. The WHS Act was introduced as a way of harmonising legislation and to offer a nationwide legislative framework for the implementation and management of a WHS system, therefore making it easier for businesses to comply with national WHS management standards.

WHS; Principles of prevention and the strict requirement
WHS is an intricate area of regulation which concerns the management and control of workplace health, safety and welfare based on the principles of prevention and the strict requirement for workplaces to provide a safe environment for their employees. It is the same as iso 45001 certification; Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S). It also concerns work activities taking place outside of the workplace on work sites, buildings, facilities, equipment, plant and mobile equipment.

How do businesses avoid workplace health and safety impact factors which can put them out of business?
The short answer is compliance.

To provide more clarity as to what that means, compliance denotes concrete evidence of the adherence to national WHS laws and regulations to ensure the safety of a workplace in relation to its employees, clients, contractors, or anyone else with a legitimate reason for being present in or around the workplace.

This evidence comes in the form of policies, procedures and plans that constitute the WHS safety management system and systematically manage health and safety in the workplace with the aim of minimizing the risk of injury and illness during work activities. However, compliance isnt just about having the right procedures, policies and forms in place. It is more about the effective and ongoing implementation of the measures they promote. If your organisation interacts with Environment, The iso 14001 certification (EMS) will be needful.

The importance of a WHS
The importance of a robust and comprehensive WHS management system cannot be overstated. The numerous benefits it offers can be classified into the following three categories:

WHS and employee morale
A positive approach to workplace safety fosters a positive workplace culture that encourages employees to better understand the risks associated with their work activities. Business owners have an ethical responsibility and moral duty to protect the safety of their employees. When employees feel that their employers take their health and safety seriously, they are more satisfied with their job and become more productive. When accident occurrences are low, morale is high and the business more performant. Maybe That is the reason employers want to know about iso 27001 cost too.

Legality of an effective WHS
Organisations are required by law to maintain a documented health and safety policy and documented risk assessments. An effective WHS management system covers these requirements and all other WHS laws, therefore helping organisations remain compliant at all times, and reducing the chances of breaches, which often result in criminal or civil legal actions carrying penalties ranging from fines to compensation payouts, remedial orders or even imprisonment. A comprehensive WHS management system results in a holistic approach to WHS management, helping organisations bring together all legal compliance requirements to ensure they never miss any of them.

Economic is one the WHS standards
Organisations known for their efforts in keeping their employees healthy and safe enjoy a good reputation, especially in high-risk industries such as construction where project profitably can be reduced to close to nothing should a serious incident occur. Potential clients know this and make this an important criterion in their selection process.

Why is WHS important? Helping human resources
When implemented effectively, a WHS management system can help organisations avoid costs associated with their human resources such as absenteeism and employee retention. Employees who do not feel safe in their workplace are likely to take more time off work. Additionally, an unsafe workplace is prone to higher turnover rates. Finally, A good WHS management system helps organisations reduce the frequency of workplace injury and illness which helps avoid the costly expenses associated with employee healthcare and workers compensation. This in turn leads to a considerable reduction in sick leave due to work related injuries.

Protect your business with Workplace health and safety
Where project profit margins are shrinking due to increased competition and rising costs of building materials having an effective WHS management system in place to support your business operation is the key to remaining competitive and avoiding the loss of profits while at the same time fulfilling your moral responsibilities.
