Kharrazi: US measures put multilateralism at risk of annihilation

IRNA - Head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharrazi said that multilateralism is running the risk of annihilation with the US unilateral measures.

Addressing the Second meeting of Paris Peace Forum on Monday, he called for pathology of multilateralism in western style and proposed collective efforts to develop neo-multilateralism.

During the meeting, major issues of the draft report of the forum were discussed when Kharrazi said that certain cases in the report need amendment reiterating that at a time when certain countries consider exit from international treaties as a way to meet their desires and impose their wills on others, multilateralism is not only on the decline, but also on the path to destruction.

Unfortunately, over the past years, when big powers failed to gain United Nations Security Council for military act, they formed coalition to attack the countries in a bid to meet their interests.

Criticizing the US for what he called launching financial imperialism, he said that it is threatening companies and banks with sanctions to cut their transactions with the countries such as Iran.

The evidence has it that multilateralism faced destruction and is not able to solve global problems. So it is necessary to examine the reasons behind its failure and collectively work for developing neo-multilateralism, Kharrazi said.

Neo-multilateralism should be comprehensive and entail all the countries interests not those of certain states, he said, noting that it is in that case that multilateralism can serve as an efficient instrument to solve all the challenges.

Kharrazi highlighted three pivots in line with development of neo-multilateralism. One is countering unilateral measures and adopting strong stances against the governments challenging global order through illogical and illegal decisions.

Restructuring United Nations Security Council and introducing amendments to its policymaking methods and changing unfair attitude of big powers towards other countries and providing equal roles for them in the new global order were the second and third pivots raised by Kharrazi.

He further noted that the Forums report has it that Iran and Saudi Arabia are competing over Syria and this is not correct, as Iran helped it to defeat the terrorists seeking to overthrow the legal government but Saudi Arabia intended to topple the government by supporting the terrorists.

The report has referred to the nuclear deal between Iran and Group 5+1, but it has not mentioned the US' bad promises and reinstatement of sanctions against Iran.

At the end of his remarks, Kharrazi enumerated major reasons behind the failure of the plans on peace in the Middle East, saying that they are unrealistic, paying no attention to the root causes of the crises, not dealing with return of the Palestinians to their homes and taking side with the Zionist regime unilaterally.

The need for achieving sustainable security in the region is political resolve by the regional states to establish honesty dialogues among the governments as well as belief in the democratic principle of one person one vote in all the countries.
