UN Workshop on disaster loss and damage assessment will be held in Tehran

UN Workshop on disaster loss and damage assessment will be held in Tehran

United Nations Iran - Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (ESCAP-APDIM) in Iran in cooperation with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will organize a TrainingWorkshop on Sendai Framework Monitoring and Disaster Loss and Damage Assessment here in Tehran from 22-24 April 2019.

Experts from Plan and Budget Organization (PBO), National Disaster Management Organization (NDMO), line ministries, government organizations and United Nations will attend the three-day workshop.

The workshop will be held amidst ongoing national efforts to overcome the consequences of recent massive floods in Iran and will contribute to developing capacities and tools for disaster loss and damage assessment as well as monitoring the implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Asia-Pacific is the most disaster-prone region of the world. The Asia-Pacific Disaster Report

2017 published by ESCAP highlighted that disaster risk is outpacing resilience, especially in countries with limited capacity to prepare for and respond to disasters. Many of these disasters are transboundary in nature. Disasters continue to threaten sustainable development. Building resilience to disasters is a key development challenge that the region is confronting with.

Understanding risk is the first priority for action stated in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of disaster losses produced by different hazards is a first and crucial step to develop actionable risk information and knowledge. National disaster loss databases enable countries to set and monitor their own national targets in disaster risk reduction and will help generate information to design and implement national disaster risk reduction strategies and plans as required to achieve the Targets of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR).
