FNA - The Iranian foreign ministry condemned the interfering remarks by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo against Venezuela, stressing the Tehran's support for the legal government of the country and its people.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the legal government in Venezuela and its nation against Washington's illegal meddling," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Saturday.

"We believe that internal problems in Venezuela can only be resolved through talks among internal political groups based on legal frameworks in the country and any foreign meddling in the internal affairs of the country is unconstructive and will only further complicate the situation," he added.

His comments came after Pompeo described Venezuela's government under President Nicolas Maduro as illegitimate, and said the United States would work with like-minded countries in Latin America to restore what it described as democracy there.

"The Maduro regime is illegitimate and the United States will work diligently to restore a real democracy to that country," Pompeo told reporters in Abu Dhabi, where he was on a tour of Middle East countries.

"We are very hopeful we can be a force for good to allow the region to come together to deliver that."
