Syria, Iran agree to continue cooperation on Idlib on UNGA sidelines - Damascus



Sputnik - Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has discussed the implementation of the Russian-Turkish memorandum on the creation of the demilitarized zone in Syrian Idlib and Astana peace process with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.



"The discussion revolved aroundthe latest meetings betweenthe guarantors ofthe Astana process, the implementation ofthe Sochi agreements [on the establishment ofthe demilitarized zone] and the constitutional commission. The sides agreed tocontinue consultations, cooperation and coordination,"the Syrian Foreign Ministry said ina statement viaits official Facebook page commenting onthe meeting that took place onthe sidelines ofthe 73rd session ofthe UN General Assembly inNew York.


The ministry also stated that, duringthe meeting, Walid Muallem has discussed the establishment ofthe demilitarized zone inSyrian Idlib province and the delivery ofhumanitarian aid tothe country withthe UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In addition, the parties discussed the agreement onIdlib and the efforts aimed atforming the constitutional commission which led tothe confirmationfromthe Secretary-General that the United Nations was ready "to make efforts aimed atforming the constitutional commission and towork toprovide humanitarian aid."

In his turn, Minister Muallem,confirmed that "the UN was promoting the political process, which should be conducted underthe Syrian guidance, belonged toSyrians withoutany external intervention," the ministry said.

The meeting ofthe high profile officials took place onthe sidelines ofthe 73rd session ofthe UN General Assembly inNew York which involved Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, Syrian Permanent Representative tothe United Nations Bashar Jaafari and the adviser ofthe Syrian foreign minister Ahmad Arnus.

The discussions ofthe demilitarized zone duringthe meeting came followingthe reports last week stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed an agreement onsetting upa 9-12 mile demilitarized zone inIdlib alongthe contact line ofthe armed opposition and the government forces byOctober 15.

The agreement was aimed atpreventing bloodshed, asthe Syrian government was preparing an offensive inresponse towhat it said were provocations fromthe militant-held enclave.

Idlib is the last holdout forextremist and rebel forces fighting totopple the government ofSyrian President Bashar Assad. Russia and Turkey, alongwith Iran, are the guarantors ofthe ceasefire inSyria, constantly engaged indialogue oncrisis settlement.
