Japan to suspend Iran oil imports over US pressure - Reports



Sputnik - Japan's major oil companies are preparing to halt all of the crude oil imports from Iran in October due to fears Washington will sanction countries importing Iranian crude, AFP reported Monday, citing Jiji Press agency.



According toAFP, Tokyo has been seeking a waiver that would allow it tocontinue importing Iranian oil, however, it appears unlikely towin one. "We've been saying we will observe a government decision [on Iranian oil imports], butwe can't comment further aswe don't disclose information onindividual trades," a spokeswoman forwholesaler Showa Shell Sekiyu told AFP onMonday.


A senior Japan's trade ministry official told AFP onMonday that Tokyo had raised the issue ofa waiver intalks withWashington, however, he declined toreveal more details.

In August, Japan's Trade Minister Hiroshige Seko said that Tokyo would hold further negotiations withthe United States tobe granted exemptions fromrecently reimposed sanctions againstTehran and its trade partners.

According tolocal media, Japanese major oil companies, however, are researching ways toincrease imports fromelsewhere tomake upthe shortfall. Crude oil imports fromIran reportedly accounted forjust 5.3 percent ofthe country's total imports butJapan relies heavily onoil supply fromthe Middle East forits energy security.

During the previous anti-Iranian sanctions period, Japan, together withSouth Korea, had secured waivers allowing them tobypass the restrictions and buy a limited volume ofIranian oil.

The US administration inMay withdrew fromthe 2015 nuclear deal withIran, which eased restrictions onthe Islamic Republic. Washington has said sanctions onoil trade would be back byNovember 4 and also urged foreign firms tophase outoperations inIran or face sanctions.
