NIAC slams US re-imposition of sanctions on Iran

IRNA - National Iranian American Council (NIAC) in a message condemned US re-imposition of nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.

'[US Secretary of State] Pompeo and Trump claim their sanctions stand with the Iranian people. The same people who will suffer as their currency collapses, as they lack access to necessary food and medicine, as the U.S. opens the door to war,' NIAC wrote in its Twitter account on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, NIAC President Trita Parsi had addressed the US president in a separate message saying, 'You cannot stand with Iranian people and at the same time destroy all of their life savings and any chance they have to put food on the table.'

'By imposing sanctions aimed at destroying the Iranian economy, Trump is declaring economic war on the people of Iran,' he added.

After Washington's May 8 pull out from the landmark Iran Deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the US gave 90 to 180 wind-down period to other countries before it starts re-imposing oil sanctions on Tehran on November 4.

This is while, Trump said earlier he is willing to meet with Iran's leadership, without preconditions, 'whenever they want'.

'I would certainly meet with Iran if they wanted to meet,' Trump was quoted by CNN as saying.

'No preconditions,' he added. 'They want to meet; I'll meet, whenever they want.'
