US seeks to reconsider key international agreements - Lavrov on Iran deal


Sputnik - Russian acting Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss the Iranian nuclear deal after Washingtons withdrawal from the multilateral agreement.




Lavrov said atmeeting withIranian foreign minister that it is necessary toprevent any new threats tonon-proliferation regime.

Russia and a number ofother countries have legitimate interests inthe Iranian nuclear deal and they must be jointly defended, Lavrov said.
"We have planned contacts withall parties tothis deal, exceptfor the United States which announced the withdrawal fromthe agreement, inthe coming days," Lavrov said.


Mohammad Javad Zarif said that balance withinJCPOA was altered followingthe US withdrawal fromthe multilateral agreement. He added that Iran will discuss ways ofcooperation in4+1 format withinJCPOA.
"Russia's position is encouraging forus. I hope that today I will be able tohold consultations withyou onthe ways ofcooperation inthe 4 + 1 format," Zarif said ata meeting withLavrov.


"Unfortunately, the protest againstinternational rules and laws has become a habitual practice forthe US government The JCPOA corresponds tothe balance ofcommitments betweenthe Iranian side and Europe and, inparticular, the United States, and ofcourse this balance has been undermined afterthe US withdrawal," Zarif said.

The current tensions aroundthe Iranian nuclear deal followed announcement ofthe US President Donald Trump that the United States would pull outof the deal. Together withwithdrawal, Trump announced Washington's plans torenew its sanctions againstTehran.

Iran expressed his opposition toTrump's move.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron also expressed concerns overWashington's decision.

The Iranian nuclear deal was reached in2015 betweenIran, the P5+1 group, inducing the five permanent members ofthe United Nations Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States), plus Germany, and the European Union.
