Sputnik - Commenting on Tehran's warning that it will withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if Washington scraps the Iran nuclear deal, US political analyst Alexander Azadegan told Sputnik that the Islamic Republic should tread carefully on the issue.

Alexander Azadegan, professor ofgeopolitics fromthe University ofCalifornia and chief editor ofthe website ImperiaNews, said that Europe is not ready forTehran's possible withdrawal fromthe Iran nuclear dealand does not want tolose the advantages that the nuclear deal brought toEuropean countries which are also againstIran's pullout ofthe Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Azadegan recalled that US attacks onIran began duringthe Obama presidency, when the White House extended the Iranian oil embargo.
"The Islamic Republic's current response toall American claims is the result ofactivities bythose politicians, who like [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu will now begin demonizing Iran and say that Tehran will produce an atomic bomb inthe nearfuture," Azadegan said.

He added that "Iran just wants tosay that it will no longer enter negotiations onits nuclear program" and that first ofall, it should be considered byUS President Donald Trump who "thinks that he can start negotiations again, bargain withIran and get advantages fromit."

US Sanctions Against Iran

Azadegan said that the Iranian economy was seriously damaged byUS sanctions butthat Iran is not going toretreat a step fromits position. He warned ofthe international community's looming distrust forIran.
"Most likely, it will happen, which is why Iran should take an offensive, yet balanced, position. The US President does not pay attention toEuropean allies and acts onorders fromthe Israeli lobby inWashington. Europe wants political and economic stability inIran rather thana regime change, inorder toinvest inthe Islamic Republic ona long-term basis. But Trump does not want this and relies onsanctions, a policy that that cannot last forever," Azadegan underscored.

He also blamed Western countries forusing "a missile theme" asa pretext tocriticize the Iran nuclear deal, also known asthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA).
"This is wrong. The deal clearly states that missiles cannot have nuclear charges and Iran complies withthis requirement. Iran strictly adheres tothe JCPOA, showing maximum goodwill inthe deal's implementation. Currently, more liberals and reformers inIran are starting tounderstand the price ofAmerican false promises and say that the US is not a partner that can be trusted," Azadegan said.

Earlier this week, Ali Shamkhani, secretary ofIran's Supreme National Security Council, told reporters that the Atomic Energy Organization ofIran was ready forsome "surprising actions" if the JCPOA is scrapped.

When asked whether it means Tehran may withdraw fromthe NPT, Shamkhani said that "this is one ofthree options that we are considering."

Since his election campaign in2016, Trump has voiced his dissatisfaction withthe JCPOA. In late January 2018, he intensified his rhetoric, asking the Congress toaddress the flaws inthe "terrible Iran nuclear deal" and threatening topull outof it otherwise.

Trump is expected toannounce his decision bythe May 12 deadline, whether or not he is imposing economic sanctions againstIran.

European countries which are signatories tothe JCPOAhave repeatedly voiced concern aboutWashington's plans onthe Iran deal, while Moscow has warned againstscrapping the agreement. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it would stick tothe JCPOA provisions aslong asother participants do. Moscow also added that it does not believe the deal needs tobe changed.

The JCPOA was signed bythe European Union, Iran and the P5+1 group ofcountries, including Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, onJuly 14, 2015.

The deal stipulates that Tehran pledges not todevelop or acquire nuclear weapons inexchange forthe lifting ofsanctions imposed againstthe Islamic Republic.
