'Finish Line'? Trump 'to Fix or Cancel' Iran nuke deal next week - Tillerson



Sputnik News- Next week, US President Donald Trump is due to consider certifying Tehran's compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The certification would grant the Iranian economy some relief from US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.




The White House is holding talks withcongressional leaders on "a very active basis" ina bid tohelp the US remain a signatory tothe 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction(JCPOA), also known asthe Iran nuclear deal, according toSecretary ofState Rex Tillerson.
"The President said he is either going tofix it or cancel it. We are inthe process oftrying todeliver onthe promise he made tofix it," he told AP.


Touching uponthe Trump administration's talks withmembers ofCongress,Tillersonsaid that "I don't want tosuggest we're acrossthe finish line onanything yet."

His remarks come asTrump has yet tomake a formal decision oncertifying the Iran nuclear deal, which stipulates Tehran sticking toits side ofthe JCPOA inexchange foran easing ofUS sanctions againstthe Iranian economy.

In October 2017, Trump refused tocertifythe JCPOA, which he said was not inAmerica's national security interest. This time, the Iran nuclear deal is set tobe certified bythe US President byJanuary 12.

The JCPOA was signed inJuly 2015 bythe European Union, Iran and the P5+1 group ofnations, namely the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany.



The deal stipulates that Iran scrap its nuclear program inexchange forrelief fromUS, EU and UN Security Council nuclear-related economic sanctions.

'Embarrassment' tothe United States.

Even duringhis election campaign, Trump slammed the JCPOA as "the worst deal ever negotiated." Since entering office inJanuary, he had more thanonce criticized Iran foralleged non-compliance withthe agreement.

Trump also threatened topull outfrom the deal, which was endorsed byhis predecessorBarack Obamaand led tothe removal ofall nuclear-related US sanctions againstTehran.

During his speech atthe UN General Assembly onSeptember 19, Trump claimed that the JCPOA served was merely a disguise forIran's nuclear program and called the deal itself an "embarrassment" tothe United States.

In 2017, Washington slappedan array ofsanctionsagainstIran, citing the Islamic Republic's drive tocontinue its missile program.
