Japanese prime minister Abe accepts Rouhani's invitation to visit Iran



Sputnik - Japanese Prime Minister accepted the official invitation of Iran's President to visit Tehran. Shinzo Abe may become the first Japanese Prime Minister to visit Iran in nearly last four decades.




UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has accepted an invitation byIran's President Hassan Rouhani tovisit Iran, Norio Maruyama the spokesperson ofthe Japanese Prime Minister told Sputnik onthe sidelines ofthe UN General Assembly inNew York.

Maruyama told reporters earlier onTuesday that duringthe bilateral meeting inNew York Rouhani invited Abe tovisit Iran.

"He accepted it [invitation]," Maruyama said onTuesday.

During the meeting the two leaders also discussed the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) agreement governing Irans nuclear program, North Korea, aswell asMiddle East issues.

The invitation forShinzo Abe tovisit Iran came amidgradual enhancing ofeconomical ties betweenTokyo and Tehran. As trade balance significantly weighed infavor ofIranwithmainly exporting petrochemical products toJapan, Tokyo traditionally pursues the strengthening ofits positions asone ofthe major car and electrical equipment supplier forthe Middle East country.

If Shinzo Abe finds a gap inhis tightly scheduled political agenda, he may become the first Japanese Prime Minister tovisit Iran innearly 40 years.

Abe and Rouhani are currently inNew York forthe 72nd session ofthe UN General Assembly, which opened onSeptember 12. The annual general debate began onTuesday and will run throughSeptember 25.
