Russia likes Merkel's idea to use experience with Iran on N Korea

Sputnik News- Russian Foreign Ministry comments on Merkel's proposal to use Iran's experience in the situation with North Korea.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Moscow is looking atGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel's proposal withinterest, butdirect parallels betweenthe situations are almost impossible, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik onWednesday.
"Of course, we take these proposals withinterest. A creative look and approach tothe situation are very much indemand," Ryabkov said when asked how Moscow assessed Merkel's statement.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedlywarned againstan escalationonthe Korean Peninsula amidUS President Donald Trump's war ofwords withNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this month.

Duringher recent phone conversation withRussian President Vladimir Putin, Merkel reaffirmed that the Korean peninsulacrisiscan only be resolved throughnegotiation. She also calledforthe resumption oftalks betweenall sides involved inthe conflict.
"But, saying this, I cannot butalso say that complete and direct parallels betweenthe two situations are probably already impossible, because the DPRK, unlikeIran, is a country that has already really mastered nuclear weapons technologies atleast toa degree that allows Pyongyang totest nuclear explosive devices and move inthe direction ofconstant improvement ofdelivery systems inthe form ofballistic missiles," he said.

Iran's ballistic missile program does not demonstrate the results that North Korea has shown recently, Sergey Ryabkov stated.
"Iran's missile program, whatever the colleagues inthe West say, is largely focused onthe space industry, and the military missile and ballistic program and the development ofthis technology inIran still did not demonstrate and does not demonstrate the results that the DPRK has recently shown," Ryabkov said.

He added that Moscow offers models toresolve the situation aroundthe DPRK both jointly withpartners, including South Korea, and independently.
"We, forour part, and together withthe PRC, both alone and incontact withother colleagues, we are doing everything tooffer some models ofsettlement. And depending onwhether these models work, these proposals will be introduced intothe dialogue and the political process, and depending onthis, then, probably, the question ofthe optimal format will be solved," Ryabkov said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister also stated that Moscow will welcome any proposals forsettling the situation aroundNorth Korea, which do not result insanctions and Pyongyang's response.

"In general, any proposals that do not reproduce this vicious logic ofsanctions Pyongyang's new provocative actions counter-sanctions the next provocative actions bythe DPRK, any proposals that oppose tothis logic something different, are very necessary and indemand," Ryabkov said assessing the prospects forGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel's proposal about "transferring" the Iran talks experience ontoNorth Korean settlement.

"From this point ofview, we welcome them," he said.
