Iran fulfilling provisions of nuclear deal - Russian foreign ministry

Sputnik - Iran fulfills its obligations in accordance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on its nuclear program and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regularly confirms this, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) Earlier inthe day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov held consultations withhis Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi inTehran and discussed the implementation ofthe JCPOA, aswell asexchanged views oninternational security issues ofmutual interest.


"The Russian side stressed that Iran firmly implements its JCPOA obligations, that is regularly confirmed bythe IAEA. Russia and Iran stressed the importance ofmaintaining ofthe agreement and noted the effectiveness ofthis mechanism interms ofensuring international and regional security, aswell asthe nuclear non-proliferation regime. It was stressed that the guarantee ofa sustainable and successful implementation ofthe JCPOA inthe long-term perspective is the fulfillment ofits obligations byall the participants and the parties involved," the statement said.

In July 2015, Iran and the P5+1 group ofcountries, namely China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, signed the JCPOA. The nuclear deal stipulated a gradual lifting ofthe economic and diplomatic sanctions previously imposed onIran inexchange forTehran maintaining the strictly peaceful nature ofits nuclear program. The plans implementation began inJanuary 2016.

US President Donald Trump's tough stance onIran, however, differs fromthe position held byhis predecessor Barack Obama, who actively promoted signing the deal. Trump believes that the Iran nuclear deal has been ineffective and, therefore, must be revised.
