Iranian Defense Minister believes Israel should be 'Completely Disarmed'

Sputnik News- The Israeli government should be disarmed for the sake of restoring peace and security in the region, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said Thursday.

Earlier inthe day, Syrian SANA news service reported that Israel launched missile strikes targeting a site nearDamascus International Airport. Commenting onthe reports, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said that the strike was compatible withIsrael's policy oftargeting streams ofLebanon-based Hezbollah's Iranian arms deliveries throughSyria.
"Given the history ofthe Israeli regime, we see that they had [pursued] nothing butwar and bloodshed. Therefore, this regime must be completely disarmed. And only afterthis regime would be completely eliminated, we can restore security and peace," Dehghan told Rossiya 24 broadcaster.

Hostilities betweenIsrael and Syria regularly escalate, withIsraeli Defense Force (IDF) planes hitting targets inSyria inresponse tocross-border fire incidents while also attacking groups Israel deems hostile insidethe country. Meanwhile, Syrian forces have several times claimed tohave shot downIDF aircraft which were violating the country's airspace. Israel has annexed the Golan Heights in1981 followingthe 1967 Six-Day War withSyria.

The relations betweenIsrael and Iran have been strained sincethe Iranian Revolution inthe late 1970s. The ties are overshadowed bya number ofissues, including Tehran's nuclear and missile programs accompanied bycontroversial anti-Israeli statements made byhigh-ranking Iranian officials, such asformer Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Hezbollah, considered byIsrael a terrorist organization, was established inthe 1980s inLebanon. Both Tehran and Hezbollah have been supporting the Syrian government inits fight againstmultiple armed groups insidethe country.
