Kazakh foreign ministry confirms start of Astana talks postponed until Thursday

Sputnik- The Kazakh Foreign Ministry's press service confirmed in a Wednesday statement that the beginning of the Astana talks on Syrian settlement has been delayed until Thursday noon (06:00 GMT).





ALMATY (Kazakhstan) (Sputnik) The next roundof Astana talks was expected totake place onFebruary 15-16, however onTuesday Syria's state television said that the beginning ofthe negotiations had been postponed untilThursday, because the delegations ofboth the Syrian armed opposition and Turkey had not arrived inAstana yet.

"Dear colleagues, the beginning ofthe next high-level session, withinthe framework ofthe Astana process onthe Syrian settlement has been moved tonoon ofFebruary 16, 2017," the statement said.

Delegations fromRussia, Iran, Syrian government and invited UN officials have already arrived inAstana.

The first roundof Astana talks onSyrian crisis settlement brought together the representatives ofthe Syrian government and the armed opposition groups forthe first time inthe six years ofthe Syrian war. As a result ofthe talks, Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed toestablish a trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire that came intoeffect onDecember 30, 2016.
