Trump may give Russia 'freer hand in Syria'

Sputnik- President-elect of the United States Donald Trump is likely to be more favorable toward the Russian actions in Syria and to try to partially disengage from the US involvement in the Middle East, Turkey's former Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) During his campaign, Trump said that Russia, Syria and Iran were the only players who really fought againstterrorists inthe Middle East, and claimed he wanted a closer coordination onit withMoscow. "Trump criticized sharply the Obama administration policy ofunnecessarily deep involvement ofthe US inthe Middle Eastern crises. Therefore one may expect that he may make attempts todisentangle the US fromsome ofthese involvements. He may agree withthe President Putin tolet Russia tohave a freer hand inSyria, if not inIraq," Yakis, who also was an ambassador tothe United Nations, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, said.

Trump also castigated the US support forthe opposition groups inSyria and Iraq, claiming that it was impossible toknow withany certainty who these people really were.

"Middle East is not a region that Trump knew very well, exceptfor the investment opportunities asa businessman. The foreign policy onthe Middle East underTrump will be shaped most probably bythe staff that he will designate such asthe State Secretary, Defence Secretary, National Security Advisor, the Coordinator forthe Middle Eastern Affairs etc.," Yakis added. Trump won the presidential race onTuesday with290 electoral votes againsthis rival Hillary Clinton's 232. The inauguration will be held onJanuary 20, 2017.
