Iran a better partner for the West than Saudi Arabia, British priest says

On Sep 09, the Catholic Herald published an article by a British priest Alexander Lucie-Smith under the title Isnt Iran a better partner for the West than Saudi Arabia?

According to this article, if the governments in the West have to choose between Iran and Saudi Arabia, surely they should choose Iran.

why? Because the future prospects of Iran seem better than those of Saudi Arabia: in other words, there is a better prospect of Iran developing into a country westerners could recognize as civilized than Saudi Arabia doing so.

The baggage that Saudi Arabia carries is arguably more horrible than that of Iran, the author writes.

According to Lucie-Smith, Iran allows religious pluralism there are churches in Iran and has diplomatic relations with the Holy See as a result.

In contrast, Saudi Arabia does not have any official relations with the Holy See and is a theocratic state which does not allow any other form of worship apart from Islam.
