Russia frees 2 Iranian inmates ahead of presidential meeting

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Russia on Sunday released two Iranian prisoners ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Baku, Irans ambassador to Moscow announced.

According to Mahdi Sanaee, the two Iranians had been arrested in Russia some three years ago and were sentenced to 12 and 14 years in prison.

The envoy said diplomatic efforts have been underway over the past two years to secure their release.

Now Russia has agreed to set them free on the day the two presidents are going to meet, he went on to say.

Presidents of Iran, Russia and the Republic of Azerbaijan are in Baku to attend a trilateral summit for talks on a range of issues, including trilateral cooperation in commerce, energy, telecommunications, environmental issues, fight against terrorism, transportation, and transit of goods.
