Bombings, shooting leave 8 dead, 28 wounded in, around Baghdad



At least eight people have been killed and more than two dozen others injured in a series of bomb explosions and a shooting attack at residential neighborhoods in and around the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two people lost their lives and eight others sustained injurieswhen an improvised explosive device went off close to a popular caf in the town ofMadain, about 20kilometers(14 miles) southeast of Baghdad, on Thursday, Arabic-language al-Baghdadia satellite television network reported.

Unidentified armed men also fatally shot a civilian in the Nabuk neighborhoodof easternBaghdad.

Elsewhere in the capitals southeasternneighborhood of Nahrawan,two civilians were killed and seven others injured when a bomb blast ripped through a commercial district.

A civilian also died and eight others were injured when an improvised explosive device detonatednear an outdoor market in the al-Bakriyah neighborhood of western Baghdad.

Additionally, two fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units lost their livesand five others suffered injuries when a roadside bomb exploded in the city ofLatifiyah, situated about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south ofBaghdad.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 1,119 Iraqis were killed and another 1,561wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in March.

According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 575. Violence also claimed the lives of 544members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 259civilians were killed.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh Takfiri militants began their march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization Units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
