US secretary of defense cancels visit to Erbil

Erbil, April 19, IRNA US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter has cancelled his visit to Erbil, reports said.


According to IRNA correspondent in Erbil, Carter has apologized to President of Kurdistan Region of Iraq Masoud Barzani and has cancelled his trip to Erbil.

Carter informed Barzani about his decision in a phone conversation on Monday.

The United States has said that it will increase the number of its troops in Iraq, deploy AH-64 Apache helicopters and help fund Kurdish Peshmerga with up to $415 million amid efforts to retake Mosul from Daesh(ISIS).

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook announced 'new accelerants' to defeat the Daesh.

'List includes additional advisors, firepower, and financial aid to the [Peshmerga],' Cook wrote on Twitter. 'New accelerants are about speeding up the defeat of ISIL by, with, and through the government of Iraq.'

The announcement followed an unscheduled visit by Carter to Iraq on Monday to discuss increasing US military efforts.
