Syrian Army takes control over Christian town Al-Qaryatayn in Homs

Syrian government forces have gained control over a Christian town in the province of Homs, Al-Qaryatayn. Meanwhile, the fighting is ongoing in the western suburbs of the town, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Sunday.

A bomb squad has begun towork inthe town, according toRIA Novosti. Militants have tried tomine roads and buildings in Al-Qaryatayn.

According toSyrian military, 80 percent ofthe town is controlled bygovernment forces. Militants continue toretreat inoff-road vehicles tothe north side ofthe mountains. Syrian army is deploying military hardware tothe town.

Earlier inthe day, the Syrian army supported bypopular defense groups started an offensive onthe main stronghold ofDaesh inthe town of Al-Qaryatayn inSyria's Homs province.

Some ofthe terrorist armed groups tried toflee fromthe town tothe nearby mountains.

The operation toliberate the Christian town ofAl-Qaryatayn fromDaesh militants began onSaturday morning. Covered byartillery fire, vanguard units ofthe army and its allies began an assault fromthe south, southeastern and northwestern directions, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

The Christian town was seized byDaesh terrorists inAugust 2015. Terrorists turned it intotheir main stronghold insouthern Homs. From Al-Qaryatayn, militants moved reinforcements and ammunition toPalmyra tofight againstgovernment forces.
