Iran, Georgia weigh post-JCPOA cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Deputy foreign ministers discussed the grounds on which Iran and Georgia can launch closer economic cooperation with the termination of anti-Iran sanctions under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi and his Georgian counterpart David Jalagania held a meeting in Tehran on Saturday and discussed a range of issues, from the latest regional developments to Tehran-Tbilisi cooperation in energy and transportation projects.

Calling for the launch of joint projects by Iran and Georgia, Sarmadi hailed the north-south corridor as a serious project that entails closer cooperation in the field of energy, apart from its main function, namely a route for transportation.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a multipurpose route for the transit of goods between Iran, Russia, Europe, India and Central Asia via shipping lines, railroad and land routes.

The Georgian diplomat, for his part, described Iran as an influential friend of Georgias, saying a new chapter has been opened in ties between Tehran and Tbilisi after the termination of sanctions against Iran.

He also noted that Georgia welcomes investment by the Iranian companies, expressing his countrys readiness to hold negotiations on the transit of goods via the north-south corridor and on electricity swap.

Iran and Georgia have ramped up efforts in recent months to revive bilateral relations, particularly after coming into force of the JCPOA in January.

On February 15, Georgia restored visa-free travel regime with Iran, which had been suspended in 2013.

With the visa-free regime in place, Iranian citizens will be able to stay in Georgia without applying for a visa for 45 days from the date of their arrival in the country. The move is expected to help promote the economic and tourism ties between the two countries.

There has been growing enthusiasm for closer ties with Iran after implementation of the JCPOA, a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
