US visa restrictions to provoke retaliation in Europe

Newly introduced restrictions on the US Visa Waiver Program will provoke European countries to employ similar measures that will cause significant difficulties for Iranian nationals traveling to the United States, the National Iranian American Council said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) On Thursday, the US Department ofHomeland Security announced that foreign nationals who have travelled toIran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria afterMarch 1, 2011 will no longer be able toenter the United States underthe Visa Waiver Program. The new regulations will also apply topeople who hold dual citizenship ofthe listed nations.

"These plans will both cause major problems fornon-US Iranian dual-nationals intheir travels tothe United States and threaten toprovoke European and other [US] VWP [Visa Waiver Program] countries toadopt similar restrictive measures," the release stated onThursday.

The release added that President Barack Obamas administration has adopted a narrow interpretation ofthe legislation amending the Visa Waiver Program and has done nothing toabsolve concerns overhow the changes could affect Iranian dual-nationals inthe United States or abroad.

The US visa waiver program provides visa-free travel toas many as20 million passengers every year coming tothe United States from38 countries, largely inEurope.
