Russia eyeing Iran military helicopter market



Russia hopes to sell Iranmilitary helicopters in the wake of the lifting of economic and financial sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

"The lifting of sanctions gives an opportunity to provide the Iranian side new helicopters," the TASS news agency quotedthe Russian Helicopters company as saying on Monday.

The Moscow-based company had initiallyannounced in December the possible delivery of several Russian-made military helicopters to Iran following theremoval of anti-Iran sanctions.

"Russian Helicopters possesses the production capacity needed to meet Iran's needs for modern helicopters in the shortest possible time," the companys deputy CEO, Alexander Shcherbinin, said on December 22.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policychief Federica Mogheriniannouncedthat sanctions imposed on Tehran have been lifted as the nuclear agreement between the country and world powerscameinto force after the International Atomic Energy Agencyconfirmed thatIran had met its commitments under thehistoric deal.

Iran andthe P5+1 countries --theUnited States, Britain,Russia,China, France andGermany-- finalized thenuclearagreement, dubbed the JointComprehensive Plan of Action, inViennaon July 14, 2015.
