Erdogan refuses to cooperate with Anti-Daesh Intelligence HQ

Turkey's government refused the invitation to join the center set up in Bhdad to exchange intelligence on terrorists that pose a threat to the region, the Turkish president said in an interview on Saturday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told al-Arabiya television that his government refuses tocooperate withthe intelligence center set upin Baghdad bythe governments ofIraq, Iran, Syria and Russia toexchange information onthe Daesh terrorist group.
"Syria, Iran, Iraq and Russia have formed a quartet ofallies and asked Turkey tojoin them, butI told President Putin that I can't sit next toa President (Assad) whose legitimacy raises doubts," Erdogan told the interviewer.


In September it emerged that Iraq, Iran, Syria and Russia had set upthe information center inBaghdad tocollect and analyze intelligence onDaesh and other militant Islamic groups inthe Middle East. The center is run bymilitary representatives fromeach country, who will each head the center ona three month rotational basis.

The Turkish president was also asked aboutthe incursion ofa 25 tank battalion and around150 Turkish troops intonorthern Iraq atthe beginning ofDecember. The Iraqi government demanded the immediate withdrawal ofthe troops and complained tothe UN Security Council aboutthe military action, which it called a violation ofIraq's sovereignty.

Erdogan replied that the Turkish forces are there atthe request ofthe Iraqi government.
"When ISIS (Daesh) entered Iraq, the Iraqis asked us tohelp, and we said we were ready todo so. We asked them tofind a place toestablish our base, and they did. Everything began inMarch last year, and inMarch we were allocated the area ofBashiqa," said the Turkish president, who began towithdraw some ofthe troops onDecember 14.


On Thursday the Arab League condemned Turkey's deployment ofits armed forces innorthern Iraq.
"The council denounces the Turkish military incursion intoIraq asan aggression againstIraqi sovereignty and a threat tothe Arab national security," stated the Arab League followingan emergency meeting ofthe organization inCairo.


It demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal ofall Turkish troops fromIraqi territory.
