Zarif predicts no real achievement for Syria in Vienna meeting

Beirut, Nov 14, IRNA – Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the upcoming meeting on Syria will have no serious achievement for the Syrian nation.

In an interview with the chief editor of the Lebanese newspaper Al-Safir published on Saturday, he also stressed that the Palestinian issue stood at the core of all developments for Iran.

Commenting on the future of Iran-US relations, he said Tehran’s talks with Americans were done within the framework of nuclear issue.

Though Americans were interested in extending talks to other regional issues as well, the foreign minister noted, Iran was not keen to go for that.

As for the reasons of Iran’s unwillingness to do this, Zarif said in the first place, Iran did not trust the US because of its support for the Zionist regime which shows Washington is not serious in settling problems in the region and also for the reason that Iran prefers to tackle regional issues with its friends in the region.

He said Iran believes regional issued have to be settled by the countries situated in the region.

He also stressed that the future of Iran-US relations depends on the manner the Americans go on with implementation of the nuclear agreement.

The Iranian foreign minister went on to note that despite problems, European countries remain Iran’s major trade partners given the extensive and profound political relations that exist between Iran and Europe.

He said Iran was now seeing Europeans showing an interest in economic and regional cooperation with Iran.

He said Iran was ready to cooperate with Europe based on its principles.

Turning to Iran’s cooperation with Syria, he said the two countries shared many views on common issues including situation in the Middle East.

He said Iran regards Russia views as far more rational and frank than those of Americans and Europeans.

Zarif further pointed to the Palestinian issue as the core of developments in the region and said problems existing now among regional countries is indeed a gift for the Zionist regime.
