Iranian FM: US can not maintain own security through support for Israel

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned Washington that it cannot provide security to the country and its citizens by supporting Israel.

"The US should accept that it cannot find security through its support for Israel," Zarif said, addressing an international forum on fighting the war impacts on the environment in Tehran on Tuesday.

"One cannot create security for itself through investment on the terrorist groups, extremism, destructive weapons and support for the Zionist regime," he added.

The US has been a staunch supporter of Israel despite all its crimes against the Palestinian people, its assistance to the terrorist groups active in the region and possession of atomic weapons which poses a big danger to the region and the world.

In October, Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations in New York Gholam Ali Khoshrou lashed out at Israel for destabilizing the region.

"The Zionists are main source of instability, anger and disappointment in the Middle East," Khoshrou said, addressing the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East.

The Iranian envoy underlined that the time was ripe for the international community to put an end to Tel Aviv's crimes and occupation.

Khoshrou said that Iran once again reiterates its stance on solidarity with the Palestinian people and supporting their inalienable rights.

The Iranian ambassador also warned that the situation in the occupied territories, specially in Eastern Beit-ul-Moqaddas is deteriorating which is alarming.

Also in May, Zarif in a statement read at the 2015 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference called for a Middle East free from the weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), and urged the international community to exert pressure on Israel to dismantle its nuclear weapons and respect the NPT.

Zarif made the remarks on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member-states in New York.

"The NAM heads of state or government in their Tehran Summit Declaration demanded that Israel, the only one in the region that has neither joined the NPT nor declared its intention to do so, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons, to accede to the NPT without precondition and further delay, to place promptly all its nuclear facilities under IAEA full-scope safeguards and to conduct its nuclear related activities in conformity with the non-proliferation regime," the Iranian foreign minister said in his statement.
