Russia, Iran in talks on arms cooperation, missile systems supplies ongoing

Director general of Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said that Russia has been supplying Iran with air defense systems and several types of radio electronics, while continuing negotiations on military-technical cooperation.

"The list ofweapons prohibited tobe delivered toIran does not apply toa number ofarms, including air defense systems, several types ofradio electronics. The Russian Federation throughRosoboronexport is maintaining contacts exactly inthese areas and delivering exactly these types ofweapons toIran," Anatoly Isaykin said inan interview withRossiya-24 television.

In 2007, Russia and Iran signed a $800-million deal forthe delivery offive S-300 missile systems. In 2011, Iran sued Rosoboronexport inthe Geneva Arbitration Court afterMoscow suspended the contract in2010, citing a UN Security Council resolution that placed an arms embargo onTehran.

In April 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban onthe contract, shortly afterthe P5+1 group ofinternational negotiators and Iran reached a framework nuclear agreement toremove all economic sanctions againstTehran inexchange forits pledge tocut back onuranium enrichment and the number ofcentrifuges inthe country.

In August, an Iranian Defense Ministry source told Sputnik that the delivery ofthe S-300 systems could pave the way fornew deals betweenthe two countries.
