Lifting of sanctions will open SCO doors to Iran - Russian deputy FM

The removal of sanctions from Tehran will help the Islamic Republic to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Iran could become a member ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) aftersanctions againstthe country are lifted, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Wednesday.

"We assume that the completion ofeverything linked tothe removal ofsanction pressure onIran will open beforethis country a way tomembership ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization," Ryabkov said, speaking atthe BRICS Global University Summit (GUS) inMoscow.

In July, Iran reached a historic deal withthe P5+1 group ofinternational mediators, including Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, guaranteeing Tehran will not develop nuclear weapons inexchange forthe lifting ofsanctions onthe country.

The European Union and the United States both adopted a legislative framework tobegin lifting anti-Iran sanctions onOctober 18.

On Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that he expected most ofthe sanctions tobe removed bythe end of2015.
