Switzerland to ease Iran sanctions

The Swiss government says it plans "in principle" to ease sanctions against Iran in line with the European Union and the United Nations following an international accord on Tehran's nuclear energy program.

The Swiss Federal Council said Wednesday it has instructed the Economy Ministry to prepare changes to the measures taken against the Islamic republic, which "open new perspectives for cooperation with Iran."

The Swiss government said its sanctions would remain until Iran carried out an "action plan" outlined in that accord, AP reported.

Based on a so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreed on by Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in July, Iran will restrict certain aspects of its nuclear energy activities in return for the removal of certain US-engineered economic sanctions.

US President Barack Obama on Monday signed an order directing his administration to take steps toward lifting sanctions on Iran in accordance with the JCPOA.

The order marks adoption day which, US officials said, is a mere formality as no sanctions will be lifted immediately.

Full relief will come on "implementation day" when the US could confirm that Iran has met its commitments under the JCPOA.

No date is set for implementation day. Western officials have said they expect that to take four to six months.

In Brussels, the European Union on Sunday published legal acts that open the way for the bloc to lift sanctions.
