Iran backs Russia contribution to anti-terrorism fight: Larijani

Irans Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijanisays the Islamic Republic supports Russias role in fighting terrorism.

The Islamic Republic of Iran backs Russias contribution to the fight against terrorism as Moscows move is based on a realistic approach and comes atthe legal request ofthe Syrian government, Larijani said on Wednesday before leaving Tehran for the Russian city of Sochi to attend the 12th meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Larijani said given the current crises in the region, one of the main topics on the agenda of the meeting would be insecurity in the region, which requiresconvergence and the participation of responsible countries to be tackled.

The Valdai International Discussion Club is a meeting of international experts focusingon Russia and its role in the world.

The senior Iranian official stressed that fighting terrorism is not a tactical or periodic measure and underlined the need for a comprehensive plan to deal with the growing menace of terrorism in the region.

Larijani also hit out at the so-called US-led campaign against Daesh, saying it has proved ineffective in curbing terrorism and has rather emboldened terrorists.

Syria has been plagued by foreign-backed militancysince March 2011. According to the UN, more than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in the warwhile millions have also been displaced.

Since September 30, Russia has been pounding the positions of Daesh and those of other terrorist groups in Syria upon a request by the Damascus government.

Some members of the US-led coalition have also been pounding purported militant positions inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or the United Nations since September 2014.
