US senator says Iran nuclear agreement will make war ‘more likely’

Republican Senator Patrick Toomey has criticized the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations, saying that it will increase the chances of a “military conflict” with Tehran.

“The deal jeopardizes American security in a fundamental way," Toomey said in the weekly Republican address on Saturday.

“This deal would give Iran the capacity to inflict harm in much more destructive ways than it is currently able to do. This deal will make military conflict more likely, not less," the Pennsylvania politician added.

The senator said that he believes there are "other serious problems with the deal that go beyond Iran’s nuclear program."

He regarded the agreement as a deal “full of holes” where, for instance, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s inspections of Iran’s nuclear sites are “nothing like the ‘anywhere, anytime’ inspections we were told were being negotiated.”

The text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) sets an up-to-24-day delay for the inspection of undeclared sites.

Republicans have been openly criticizing the JCPOA since the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations – Russia, US, UK, France, China and Germany- in July.

Most Republicans, along with a number of prominent Senate Democrats, have opposed the agreement.

So far, 38 senators - 36 Democrats and two liberal-leaning independents - have decided to vote in favor of the agreement in Congress, which is enough to uphold a presidential veto in case of an initial turn-down.

Democrats need 41 votes in the Senate to mount a filibuster, which is a tactic that involves legislators obstructing the passage of a bill by speaking at inordinate length when the measure is debated.

The text of the JCPOA is under scrutiny in Congress and the lawmakers have until September 17 to vote on it.
