Araqchi sees nuclear agreement as no treaty

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in the sixth meeting of the Iranian Parliament's special committee in charge of examining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Sunday, asked legislators not to consider the agreement as a treaty.

"The Parliament should play a much stronger role than just ratifying the JCPOA because if it approves the agreement, it will be turned into a binding law for us," Araqchi was quoted as saying in the meeting.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister also added that violation of UNSC resolution on the Iran-Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) agreement would not lead to resumption of economic sanctions, reminding that the agreement is binding, while the resolution is not.

Iran and the Group 5+1 reached an agreement in Vienna on July 14 to end 13 years of nuclear standoff.

A few days after the attainment of the nuclear agreement, Chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security Sub-Committee Mohammad Reza Mohseni Sani told FNA that "the government and parliament should study the text of the agreement precisely".

But later some officials said that approval of the JCPOA by the parliament will turn it into a law in Iran and binding for any future government, which won't be to the benefit of the country if the other side doesnt meet its undertakings.

Yesterday, Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council Mohsen Rezayee said the parliament's green light to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will strengthen its implementation.

"It is good for the future history of Iran to have the Parliament review the endorsed agreement," Rezayee said in a televised program on Saturday.

He explained that in case the views of the Parliament and the Supreme National Security Council on the adoption of the nuclear agreement are different, the involvement of leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei will leave nothing unsettled.
