Navy commander: Iran to launch Sahand destroyer in coming months

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Irans newest destroyer Sahand is 70 percent complete and is expected to be launched within the next couple of months, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said.

Sahand is the third destroyer produced as part of the Mowj (Wave) project, Sayyari said in a gathering of Iranian veterans in Tehran on Sunday.

Sahands predecessors, Jamaran and Damavand, are currently in service with the Navy and used for naval missions in international waters.

According to Sayyari, Sahand will be launched within the next couple of months, but an exact date for the launch of the new destroyer could not be set because the vessel is still undergoing technical tests.

As regards Irans new submarine Fateh (conqueror), the commander said it still incomplete and being tested, hoping that the watercraft would be unveiled by March 2016.

Earlier this month, Sayyari had announced that Irans new homegrown naval gear, including missile-launching warships, destroyers, as well as squadrons of vessels and submarines, will be launched until March 2017.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to other countries, saying that the Islamic Republics defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
