Iran calls for universal elimination of nuclear weapons

Nuclear weapons should be completely eliminated worldwide as they are "detrimental to international peace and security," the Iranian government said in a statement following a passage of the Security Council resolution endorsing the Iran nuclear deal.



MOSCOW (Sputnik) On Monday, the UN Security Council voted unanimously toadopt UN Resolution 2231 insupport ofa nuclear deal reached last week byIran and the P5+1 group, comprising China, France, Russia, the United States, Britain and Germany.
"The Islamic Republic ofIran underlines the imperative oftotal elimination ofnuclear weapons, asa requirement ofinternational security and an obligation underthe Treaty onthe Non-Proliferation ofNuclear Weapons (NPT)," the statement, issued onMonday, reads asquoted byIran's ISNA news agency.


The statement added that Tehran is committed toactively contribute to "all international diplomatic and legal efforts tosave humanity fromthe menace ofnuclear weapons and their proliferation."


The Iranian government stressed the importance ofthe establishment ofthe Middle East nuclear weapon free zone.


The P5+1 international negotiators have been attempting toreach a comprehensive agreement withIran that would insure the peaceful nature ofthe country's nuclear program sinceNovember 2013, when an interim was signed.

On July 14, a final deal was struck inthe Austrian capital ofVienna afterover two weeks ofcontinuous talks and multiple extensions ofself-imposed deadlines.

According tothe final text ofthe nuclear agreement, Iran will underno circumstances seek todevelop or acquire a nuclear weapon and, inexchange, will receive sanctions relief. The text details how the final treaty will positively contribute toregional Middle Eastern security.
