Iran's first cargo ship arrives at Oman's Sohar port

TEHRAN (Tasnim) A few weeks after Tehran and Muscat opened a new shipping route, the first cargo ship delivering Iranian goods docked at the Omani port of Sohar.

A container with a capacity of 96 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) loaded with Iranian goods docked at the port on Saturday.

The vessel, titled Genaveh 12, is the first ship put into operation in the new Iran-Oman shipping line, which was opened some two weeks ago.

Back on May 14, Iran and Oman established a new shipping route between the Iranian port of Shahid Rajaee and Oman's Sohar.

The route was established under a trilateral agreement among the chambers of commerce of Iran and Oman and an Iranian private sector company engaged in sea transportation business.

According to Abdolhossein Khederi, CEO of the Iranian firm, three vessels, including two container ships and a bulk carrier, will start crisscrossing between the two ports every 15 days in the initial phase.

If exporters welcome the new service, more capacious freighters will be employed even on a weekly basis, he added.

The ships employed in the line will be equipped with refrigerated containers, since the route will be used to transport agricultural products and perishable foods, Khederi explained.
