Official: Iran's policy based on helping IAEA

Tehran, April 15, IRNA Director General of the Political and International Affairs Department at Foreign Ministry Hamid Baeedinejad said in Tehran on Wednesday that the questions of International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) cannot last for ever and Iran's policy is based on helping the Agency.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting between Iranian officials and IAEA envoys, Baeedinejad said, 'The IAEA questions cannot go on for ever because many of the questions are based on the claims of hostile countries.'

He said, 'We have informed the IAEA that if they have any clear information on the venue of an alleged blast, set forth the necessary information. We are ready for sending the IAEA team to the spot so as to clarify the issue because for us it is very obvious that the claim is not true at all.'

'Because we believe in the issue strongly, we have announced our readiness to help the IAEA clarify the issue it but the Agency said in communications with us that they do not have any information on the site of the explosion and it is only a claim made by others.'

Baeedinejad said when the IAEA itself has no information on the site of the alleged explosion, it would be difficult for it to clarify the subject.

On agenda of the Iran-IAEA meeting, Baeedinejad said we will in today's meeting deal with two issues related to previously-held discussions on our country's activities.

A delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for talks on how to proceed with a framework of cooperation that Iran and the UN nuclear agency signed in November 2013.

The visiting delegation is led by IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of Department of Safeguards Tero Tapio Varjoranta.

According to Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), the purpose of the visit is to hold talks on the Joint Statement on a Framework for Cooperation, which outlines a roadmap on mutual cooperation on certain outstanding nuclear issues between Iran and the IAEA.

Kamalvandi said the statement entails cooperation in a step-by-step process, adding that two steps have been taken so far and only two of the five subjects in the third step are now being discussed.

'The total of the three stages of cooperation between Iran and the agency included 18 subjects, 16 of which have been finalized,' he explained.

The two remaining issues include the IAEA's questions on alleged research activities into explosives testing and neutron calculations, Kamalvandi said, noting that Iran has repeatedly announced its readiness for full cooperation with the agency to settle the issues.

Back in November 2014, Iran's IAEA ambassador had voiced Tehran's preparedness to enhance cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog by offering the agency access to Marivan, a region mentioned in a 2011 IAEA report for alleged nuclear activities.
