Significant progress in Iran nuclear talks, but no final results - FM Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said there is still plenty ofwork aheadin drawing up a final agreement, but sounded hopeful that a result would finally be reached.

LAUSANNE (Sputnik) Significant progress has been noted inthe P5+1 and Iran talks onnuclear energy, butno final results have been reached yet, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said Thursday.

We have made significant progress. We don't have any final result yet, Zarif told journalists inSwitzerland where talks onIransnuclear ambitionshave been underway forseveral days.

He said that there is still plenty ofwork ahead indrawing upa final agreement, butsounded hopeful that a result would finally be reached.

What we expect atthis stage is we hope toset outparameters ofresolutions forthe issues that need tobe resolved inorder towrite, draft, and hopefully agree ona comprehensive plan ofaction which would be a final program, Zarif added.

Theministeradded that a joint statement will be made byhim and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, if negotiations are successful.

Earlier onThursday, a US State Department spokesperson stated that ongoing talks onthe Iran nuclear issue inthe Swiss city ofLausanne stopped fora few hours aftera night ofnegotiations, resuming later inthe day.

The Lausanne roundof negotiations began March 19. Iran and the P5+1 group ofinternational mediators, which includes Russia, the United States, France, China, the United Kingdom and Germany, were supposed toreacha political framework agreement onTuesday. However, the talkscontinueasthe parties have not yet come toan agreement.

The West, which fears that Iran is developingnuclear weaponsunderthe guise ofa civilian nuclear energy program, wants Tehran tohalt its uranium enrichment program and decrease the number ofcentrifuges inthe country.

Tehran, inturn, wants Western sanctions imposed againstIran overits nuclear activities tobe fully lifted aspart ofthe deal withthe P5+1.
