Iran, P5+1 discuss new ideas, solutions expected on Sunday

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has announced that certain progress has been made in the ongoing Iran nuclear talks in Lausanne.


LAUSANNE (Sputnik) Certain progress has been made inthe ongoing Iran nuclear talks inLausanne, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has announced, adding that concrete decisions are expected tobe made onSunday.

"We have made some progress inthe form ofdeveloping new ideas, butwe don't have any solution yet. We hope that we can come toa conclusion onthese new ideas and make some solutions tomorrow," Araqchi told journalists onSaturday, answering a question froma Sputnik reporter.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who arrived inLausanne onSaturday, announced that the P5+1 group ofinternational negotiators and Tehran "have never been so close toa deal," butstressed that some critical issues remain unsolved.

China's chief negotiator atthe Iran nuclear talks, Wang Qun, told RIA Novosti onSaturday that Russia and China were working onnew proposals toresolve the remaining differences onthe Iranian nuclear program.The West has been accusing Iran ofworking onthe development ofnuclear weapons underthe guise ofa civilian program. Tehran has repeatedly stressed that its nuclear activities are aimed atmeeting Iran's growing energy needs and are forpeaceful purposes only.

Since November 2013, Tehran and the P5+1 group, which includes Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, have been holding talks aimed atreaching an agreement that will ensure the peaceful nature ofIran's nuclear program.

The most recent roundof negotiations onIran started inthe Swiss city ofLausanne onThursday and will last untilSunday, March 29.

The final agreement onIran's nuclear activities is expected tobe reached byJuly, 2015. The political framework forthe deal should be agreed uponby the end ofMarch.
