TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's new Ambassador to the United Nations in New York Gholam Ali Khoshrou stressed that he will use all the capacities of the international body to annul the unjust sanctions against Tehran and strengthen global peace and security.

"We should make use of all possibilities, specially the UN capacity, to strengthen peace and security in the region and the world and remove the unjust sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran," Khoshrou said upon arrival in the US on Sunday.

He also underscored the necessity for fighting extremism and violence as well as Iranophobia, Islamophobia and anti-Islamism in the world.

"Given the extensive domain of the Islamic Republic of Iran's power, we have different roles at the UN which should be played well," Khoshrou said.

In relevant remarks in September, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underscored Tehran's major and important role in settling different problems in the region.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran plays a constructive and effective role in resolving the regional crises and need for making greater use of Iran's potentials and capabilities and to solve the current problems in the region is necessary today," Ban Ki-moon said during the meeting in New York.

He emphasized that Iran was a major player also in the Persian Gulf region and could play important roles using its broad capacities and capabilities.

The two sides in the meeting exchanged views on various issues, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and the spread of extremism and terrorism in the region, and the process of Iran's nuclear talks with the Sextet.
