Russia playing constructive role in Iran nuclear talks, US official says

Difficulties in US-Russia relations have not spilled over into the cooperation between international powers and Iran, US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to the Senate.
WASHINGTON, January 21 (Sputnik) Russia is playing a constructive role ininternational negotiations overIrans nuclear program despiteWestern imposed sanctions onMoscow, US Deputy Secretary ofState Antony Blinken told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee onWednesday.

They [Russia] continue[s] toplay constructive role and have been actually very helpful inpushing Iran inthe direction it has togo if we are going toget any kind ofresolution, Blinken told senators ata hearing onthe status ofnuclear negotiations withIran.

linken said Western sanctions againstRussia overUkraine and differences withthe United States onthe future ofSyria have not spilled overinto global cooperation betweeninternational powers and Iran.

Iran and the P5+1 Russia, the United States, United Kingdom, China, France and Germany are negotiating toverify Tehrans nuclear program is peaceful inexchange foreasing sanctions. On Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said negotiations withIran have progressed and he expected results despiteremaining challenges.

Since 2006 the P5+1 and Iran have held several meetings butthe sides have failed toreach a compromise. In November 2014, the sides agreed tocontinue negotiations untilJuly 2015.

The United States, alongwith its allies, have imposed multiple sanctions targeting Russias banking, energy and military sectors, aswell asseveral high-profile individuals, overMoscows alleged interference inUkraines internal affairs.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations ofinvolvement inthe Ukrainian conflict and continues tourge the warring sides toestablish direct dialogue.
