Muscat: An 'unlimited' number of scholarships are available for Omani students who wish to study in Iran, according to an Iranian official.
Speaking to Times of Oman, Nasr Hemadi, cultural attaché of the Iranian Embassy in the Sultanate, said that Iran has developed very fast in recent years in the field of science and technology and has one of the highest research output among other countries.

Since long, Iran has been offering scholarships to students of different countries so that they can utilise and promote the knowledge and expertise that they would gain by studying at Iranian universities back in their countries, he said.

Also, every foreign student who studies in Iran is considered an unofficial cultural ambassador who can promote Iran and its culture in other countries, added Hemadi.

The official noted that given the 'close' and 'historical' relations between Iran and Oman, Iran has not set any limit on the number of scholarships that can be granted to Omani students who apply and meet the necessary requirements.

Scholarships are available for almost all the majors from BA to PhD, he said.

Hemadi said that many Omani students are still not aware of these scholarship programmes but five scholarships were granted to Omani students for the current Iranian academic year.

Asked about the application process, he said that students can apply through either Oman's higher education authorities or their universities. Also, they can submit their applications to the Iranian Embassy in Muscat and the embassy will process them in coordination with the Iranian authorities, the official said, adding that if an application is accepted, the Iranian authorities will inform the student through Omani officials.

In addition, the Iranian cultural attaché said given the fact that the main medium of instruction in Iran is Persian, intensive Persian language courses will be held for foreign students that will last for six to nine months.

These courses will be held at Qazvin International University in Iran and the students will then be sent to the universities that they had applied for, said Hemadi.
