In a Sunday meeting with a group of senior Iranian Navy officers in Tehran, the Leader said the Islamic Republics naval forces play a great and important role in safeguarding the countrys national security.

The Leader also praised the sacrifices made by the countrys naval forces at different junctures, particularly during the eight-year war imposed on the Islamic Republic by the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1980s.

In recent years, the Iranian Navy has been increasing its presence in high seas to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

In line with international efforts to combat piracy, the Iranian Navy has been also conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard the vessels involved in maritime trade, especially the ships and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran.
